Why is an industrial wastewater treatment plant necessary?

Industrial wastewater is evaluated to have a high concentration of pollutants. These include total suspended solids, high levels of heavy metals multiple times the permissible limit.

When these waste materials are discharged into the receiving source, they seep into the groundwater below the ground, affecting the drinking water source of residents. Prolonged use can lead to diseases related to bones, kidneys, cancer, and other chronic illnesses.

If industrial wastewater is not treated, it will significantly impact the surrounding environment and the life of organisms.

With high levels of heavy metals and extremely high chemical content, industrial wastewater will alter the original properties of the soil, negatively affecting crops.

The use of polluted water due to the influence of untreated industrial wastewater also has a significant impact on livestock, poultry, and other animals.

The BOD index in industrial wastewater is high. If not treated and discharged directly into ponds, lakes, rivers, or streams, it reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. This adversely affects the lives of aquatic organisms and humans.

Additionally, industrial wastewater contains high levels of nutrients such as N, P. If not treated, it can cause eutrophication of the receiving source, creating favorable conditions for the growth of algae. When these algae die, it leads to multiple pollution incidents in areas receiving industrial wastewater.

Why is an industrial wastewater treatment plant necessary

Classification of industrial wastewater sources

In general, industrial wastewater originates from two main sources, including:

Domestic wastewater in industrial zones

This water source is discharged from the daily activities, cooking of employees in the area, hygiene, kitchen, office areas of companies in the industrial zone.

Domestic wastewater here is relatively complex. It contains some types of cleaning chemicals, disinfectants. It also contains microorganisms, bacteria, BOD5, extremely high COD.

These are all harmful substances that can directly affect human health. Typical diseases include respiratory, digestive, or dangerous infectious diseases.

Wastewater from industrial production processes

Depending on the industry, the composition of wastewater from industrial production processes will vary. Specifically as follows:

  • Food industry: Wastewater from the food industry includes BOD levels, suspended solids, pesticides, growth hormones, food colorings, organic residues, etc.
  • Power plant wastewater: Includes suspended solids, mercury, chromium, selenium, lead, arsenic, cadmium, gaseous sulfur, fly ash, etc.
  • Iron and steel production wastewater: Contains gaseous products such as Aphthalene, Benzene, Xyanua, Ammonia, Phenol, Cresol, Anthracene. Animal fats, solid acids, Furan dioxin, etc.
  • Paper and pulp industry: Contains pollutants such as TSS, BOD, Chloroform, COD, suspended solids, Furan dioxin, etc.

Process description

Wastewater generated from industrial zones is directed to a collection tank through a system of wastewater pipes. At the beginning of each pipe, trash screens, debris screens are installed to retain coarse debris. Additionally, pH and SS concentration measuring devices are installed to check the parameters and characteristics of the wastewater.

Collection tank

The collection tank is usually built underground. It serves to collect debris and stabilize the wastewater source. In the tank, 3 alternating submersible pumps are installed to pump water to the wastewater treatment system behind. Here, the settling process takes place to filter out coarse sediments and impurities in the wastewater.

Grease trap tank

The main task of this facility is to separate oil molecules from the wastewater through a scraper trough system installed above the water surface.

Since oil has a lower specific gravity than water, it will float to the top. The removed grease will be treated separately. The wastewater after oil separation will be transferred to the equalization tank.

Equalization tank

Before biological treatment, the wastewater will be sent to the equalization tank.

This facility's main function is to regulate the quality of wastewater and the flow rate of the water source. Here, 2 submersible pumps are installed for mixing to prevent anaerobic decomposition causing foul odors.

SBR biological tank

The SBR biological tank operates according to the following 5 basic processes: Water supply - aeration - aeration - aeration and settling. The operation process will be continuous and effectively treat wastewater.

The SBR biological tank treatment process is considered simple but highly effective. It does not require settling tanks 1, 2, and does not require sludge recycling. Therefore, it reduces construction area and investment costs.

The SBR tank operation is less affected by the incoming BOD load. At the same time, it can treat nitrogen and phosphorus compounds to standard levels.

Disinfection tank

The disinfection tank removes any remaining bacteria in the wastewater after passing through the above treatment stages.

At this stage, chlorine chemicals are added to the tank. After passing through the disinfection tank, the wastewater will meet environmental technical standards and be discharged into the receiving source.
