Seafood wastewater is water generated during the processing of seafood (including thawing, washing, disinfection) – such as shrimp, crab, squid, fish... at seafood processing facilities. It contains a lot of organic matter, fat, Nitrogen, Phosphorus... These substances are extremely harmful to organisms, including humans.
Vietnam has a rich and diverse marine resource. There is an old saying: "Vietnam has golden forests, silver seas, and fertile land." Vietnam's coastline is 3260km long. Therefore, the number of people living by fishing and aquaculture is very large. In fact, there are countless seafood processing facilities of various sizes.
Without a treatment system, discharging wastewater directly into the environment will lead to increasingly severe pollution of seafood water sources.
If the water is protected and meets safe seafood wastewater standards, the sustainable benefits will be passed down to future generations.
Conversely, if seafood water sources are not protected, polluted, exceeding safe standards, it will have a significant impact on humans, aquatic environments, and the loss of valuable resources.
Seafood processing wastewater treatment systems come in various types with different specific capacities, suitable for different sizes of seafood processing facilities.
However, in general, these systems are structured as follows:
Seafood wastewater contains various types and amounts of organic matter due to the species of seafood and the processing procedures of seafood processing facilities. The tank will separate all organic matter, regardless of weight, from the seafood wastewater.
It stabilizes the flow rate of seafood wastewater and regulates its concentration. To prevent sedimentation, gas obstruction, and unpleasant odors, an air blower may be installed inside the regulation tank.
The coagulation tank's function is to coagulate all suspended solids, allowing them to settle at the bottom of the tank. Coagulant substances are directly added to the tank, which can be Polymers or PAC.
The flotation process aims to completely separate and remove all organic matter and suspended solids from seafood wastewater.
Utilizing the reaction of organic matter in seafood wastewater with certain types of microorganisms such as Methanobacillus, Methanobacterium, Methanosarcina, Methanococcus. It converts them into dissolved organic matter, consumes them, and produces fatty acids, carbon dioxide, and easily evaporated hydrogen.
It completely removes harmful substances such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus from seafood wastewater.
Using Chlorine, Ozone, UV rays to eliminate bacteria and algae.
A specially designed system will separate and remove organic matter, sediment, and solids from seafood wastewater.
The seafood processing wastewater treatment system applies reactions between substances, the impact of microorganisms to transform harmful substances in seafood wastewater into harmless or evaporated substances.
After treating seafood processing wastewater through the system, it will meet the following safety standards:
No. | Parameter | Unit | Value C | |
A | B | |||
1 | pH | - | 6-9 | 5.5-9 |
2 | BOD5 at 20°C | Mg/l | 30 | 50 |
3 | COD | Mg/l | 50 | 80 |
4 | Total Suspended Solids (TSS) | Mg/l | 50 | 100 |
5 | Ammonia (as N) | Mg/l | 10 | 20 |
6 | Total N | Mg/l | 30 | 60 |
7 | Total oil, fat from plants and animals | Mg/l | 10 | 20 |
8 | Residual Chlorine | Mg/l | 1 | 2 |
9 | Total Coliforms | MPN/100ml | 3,000 | 5,000 |
Table of safety standards for seafood processing wastewater after treatment through the system
Building and installing a seafood processing wastewater treatment system in the current and future stages at seafood processing facilities is extremely necessary. Seafood processing facilities should contact Toan A Company immediately via hotline 0913.543.469 for consultation, construction, and installation of a suitable and effective system for each specific scale.

Advanced domestic wastewater treatment technology by Toan A JSC
Domestic wastewater is one of the largest sources of pollution to the environment if not treated properly. In Vietnam, besides individual households, urban areas, apartment buildings, restaurants, hotels, and service establishments are required to comply with the treatment of domestic wastewater according to the QCVN 14:2008 standard set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to ensure environmental safety and human health. Currently, there are many methods for treating domestic wastewater, each with its own characteristics and specific applications, suitable for different types of wastewater and specific requirements. Let's explore this issue further with Toan A JSC in the following article!
